For the second year in a row, Dog Sports Unlimited was the operator of choice for the Fast CAT events hosted in conjunction with the West Volusia Kennel Club's Annual Dog Show. This year was even more successful than last year. Over the course of the three day event, the DSU team ran over 300 dogs down the track. Some faster than others, but all of them having a great time.
Another bright spot was the number of first timers stepping up with their dogs. It's great to see more people taking interest in the sport. Our crew was very patient and did a wonderful job helping newbies learn the ropes.
We had some unplanned excitement when our 20' x 10' registration tent went for a flight up and over the track. Wow! That was a heavy tent and to see the distance it traveled, was amazing. Lesson learned - always, always, always stake down your tents! And not with just those over sized nails they give you.
We had a pretty stiff wind blowing for all three of the days. It definitely helped keep everyone a little cooler but it also made communications more difficult on the track. Dogs couldn't hear their their owners at the finish line. For the seasoned Fast CAT dogs, that wasn't a problem but for the newbies and those dogs that were slightly less focused on the lure, it made encouragement from the far end of the track hard to achieve. Of course, it also made keeping a tent in place a challenging endeavor as well.
One last thing I want to say is "Thank You" to all the incredible people that volunteered at the event. I couldn't have asked for a better crew. Everyone did a fantastic job and Maria and I are forever in your debt. Without your help we couldn't have had such a successful three days of Fast CAT.
We've received a lot of compliments regarding the crew from people that entered and ran their dogs. All that positive energy is contagious and a lot of people noticed and appreciated it. Kudos gang!
Now I have to take care of the paperwork. It's my least favorite part of the events but you gotta do what you gotta do.
We hope to be back next year to do it all over again.
Cheers,
Mark
